New Releases, 2 February 2010

Yay!  Films!  Pretty good week, so let's get started...

ZOMBIELAND
A tongue-in-cheek (or tongue-falling-out-of-bloody-hole-in-cheek) look at a zombie-ridden near future

COLD SOULS
Paul Giamatti plays Paul Giamatti, a depressed actor who puts his soul in cold storage.  But when it goes missing, hijinks ensue!  Dry, sarcastic, scowl-faced hijinks.  Played at Ragtag

HOUSE OF THE DEVIL
Taut horror flick from director Ti West, edge-of-your-seat type suspense, played at Ragtag

ONG BAK 2
When Ong Bak 1 was a wild and sequel-inspiring success, the filmmakers stated that they would not simply regurgitate the story of a villager reluctantly kicking countless asses in order to retrieve the village's beloved buddha statue.  This time it's the village's beloved elephant, and as if that wasn't enough...it's set in THE PAST.  The past!  How'd they do that?

AMELIA
From renowned director Mira Nair comes a biopic of the life and possible death of Amelia Earhart

NEW YORK, I LOVE YOU
In the vein of Paris, Je T'Aime, a series of short films, by well known directors, set in and about the big apple

LOVE HAPPENS
Don't you just love love?

BLACK, WHITE AND GRAY
A critically lauded film about Sam Wagstaff and Robert Mapplethorpe, lovers and collaborators

That's all for now.  Don't forget that we have tons of previously viewed dvds & vhs for sale, and on weds. you can rent 3 for the price of 2!  Yowza.  Have a great week!

New Releases, 26 January 2009

It's a big week everybody: soul music, Romantic poets, lady roller derby, Michael Jackson dances on, Clive Owen minus the shooting and so, so much more...

WHIP IT

Ellen Page (Juno) rolls into the rink, gets some bruises, falls in love and learns some important life lessons, all thanks to director Drew Barrymore

MICHAEL JACKSON: THIS IS IT

The King of pop in concert.  Somehow I don't believe the title.

SOUL POWER

Critically lauded doc about the 12 hour, 3 night concert held in Zaire when Ali fought Foreman.  Explosive performances, played at Ragtag

BRIGHT STAR

Jane Campion's great film, about Keat's truncated final romance.  Like most really good movies, also played at Ragtag

THE BOYS ARE BACK

A fairly typical Clive Owen film, if you substitute guns with children and bloody death with feelings.

SAW 6

Yes, they made a 6th.  Yes, people die in gross ways.  You're welcome.

I HOPE THEY SERVE BEER IN HELL

Brofest.

PONTYPOOL

Thriller about a DJ slumming it in a small town that's got something wrong with it..."28 Days Later as written by Noam Chomsky," says Entertainment Weekly.  I don't know how to begin to parse that.

LITTLE ASHES

The hot vampire from Twilight plays Salvador Dali!  That should be enough to get anyone to see this film.

SURROGATES

Bruce Willis investigates the first murder in a future utopia where people have robots do stuff for them and this has stopped crime somehow.

MEETING DAVID WILSON

Documentary about the repercussions of slavery: filmmaker David A. Wilson visits DAvid B. Wilson, whose family used to own his family.  Awkward...

MERMAID

Well reviewed Russian film, from last year's Sundance.

Told you it was a big week.  Enjoy!

WEEDS Season 5

Hot new season of the TV sensation!  What could possibly happen next?!??! Find out NOW!

PANDORUM

Dennis Quaid stars in some scary sci-fi, set exclusively in...SPACE

NO IMPACT MAN

From last year's True/False, the story of a family that tries to live one year with minimal ecological impact.

OUTRAGE

Great documentarian Kirby Dick's look at the hypocrisy of gay politician's and Washington's
general anti-gay agenda

GAMER

Gerard Butler has to get to the bottom of the most dangerous game...

And, to round it all out,
BLOOD CREEK
(crazy nazis)
WHITEOUT
(Kate Beckinsale in Antarctica)
and THE KEEPER
(Steven Seagal is a double-crossed cop)

Have a great week everybody!

New Releases, 12 January 2009

It's a fresh New Movie Tuesday in a fresh new year!  We've packed a ton of highly recommended movies into this week, so let's get to it...

MOON

Great suspenseful, quasi-philosophical sci-fi starring Sam Rockwell as a lone moon miner.  Played at Ragtag.

BIG FAN

Comedian Patton Oswalt puts in an acclaimed performance as a sports-obsessed loser.  Written and directed by the writer of THE WRESTLER, played at Ragtag and well worth a watch.

IN THE LOOP

Hilarious, smart ensemble comedy about the lead-up to an unnamed invasion, and the mishaps that occur along the way.  Also played at Ragtag.

THE HURT LOCKER

On nearly everyone's top 10 lists, critically acclaimed war flick from Kathryn Bigelow.  Want to guess where it played?...hint: it rhymes with Sagbag

PASSING STRANGE

The critically- and audience-beloved autobiographical musical, written and starring Stew and directed by Mr. Spike Lee

AMREEKA

Immigrants from the West Bank arrive in Illinois, to try and make a new life

NUN OF THAT

"Sister Kelly Wrath is a nun with a temper problem.  After being gunned down in an alley, she is selected by God to join the Order of the Black Habit, a group of supernatural vigilante nuns on a mission to rub out the mob.  But first, Moses, Gandhi and Jesus have a few challenges up their sleeves for her..."

FAME

You know the story.  New version of the classic musical.

TYLER PERRY'S I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF

Tyler Perry's back with another heartfelt morality fable with attitude

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY

Low-budget halloween sensation, about a possibly haunted house and the pair that live there...

Hope you enjoy the offerings, and have a great week!

New Releases, 5 January 2009

It's been a nice few weeks' holiday hiatus from blogging, but they kept making really good movies and putting them out on dvd, so we might as well pick back up our little correspondence...

DISTRICT 9
Excellent, thrilling allegorical-sci-fi in South Africa. Not to be missed

(500) DAYS OF SUMMER
Hot young quirky kids in vintage clothes in love. Nobody has had anything negative to say about this film, ever. In the world.

EXTRACT
Mike Judge's follow up to Office Space and Idiocracy. You can expect some piercing satire.

UNITED STATES OF TARA Season 1
Toni Collette stars in the lauded tv show about a lady with many personalities.

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS
Makes Avatar's special effects look like the dinosaurs in the original King Kong.
There's hamburgers FALLING OUT OF THE SKY! HAMBURGERS!!!

BIG LOVE Season 3
More of the polygamo-comedy hit

LOREN CASS
Really well-reviewed film by young director Chris Fuller, full of ennui and other edgy things     http://tinyurl.com/y8dlzqf

THE BUTCH FACTOR
I'm not sure what it's about, but that's one hot dude.

LAILA'S BIRTHDAY
A "fleet, dark urban comedy" from Palestine, also getting great reviews

IT MIGHT GET LOUD
Whoa daddy, look out--it's the Edge from U2, Jack White and that guy from Led Zeppelin, just talkin' 'bout rockin'. Apparently there's a sweet jam in the middle, too (for non-rocking types, that's when people make up music for a while)

That's it for now, keep watch for a new update in a few days and have a great week!
